A Meta Pixel is a small piece of JavaScript code that records actions that occur on your website. With the Meta Pixel, you can track user actions on your website (such as adding items to a shopping cart or initiating a checkout), and you can also use the Meta Pixel to deliver remarketing ads to users who have previously viewed specific pages or subscribed to your email list.
To create a Meta Pixel, first go to the Meta Event Manager and select Connect Data Sources on the left side of the page.
Check the box for your website and click Connect. Give your pixel a descriptive name (up to 50 characters) and click Create Pixel.
Once you click Create Pixel, the Pixel is created and cannot be deleted. Click Continue to set up Pixel, enter your website URL, and click Check. The system will tell you whether your website can quickly set up Pixel through partner integration (such as Shopify, WordPress, or WooCommerce) and associate your data.
Click Check. If there is an applicable partner integration option, the system will have a green check mark as shown above. Click Continue.
You can follow the recommended instructions to set up the Pixel code through partner integration, or you can choose to set it up yourself. Click Continue.
There are two options to choose from, namely setting up both Meta Pixel and Conversion API, or only Meta Pixel. After confirmation, click Continue.
Next, you can install the Pixel code manually on your website or choose to use partner integration. Take manual code installation as an example. Click Manual code installation, and then jump to the event management tool. Follow the instructions on the page to copy the pixel base code.
Then go to the backend of your WordPress website and find the Theme File Editor under Appearance. Then paste the Meta Pixel base code at the bottom of the header section, just above the < /head > tag, and click Update File to save. After installing the Pixel base code, return to the Event Management Tool Getting Started and click Continue to further optimize the Pixel code according to the system instructions.
Once you have that setup, you can test your browser events by going to the Test Events tool in Events Manager and entering your website URL. Whenever a page with the Pixel installed is loaded, fbq(‘track’, ‘PageView’) will be called, which will be tracked as a PageView event in Events Manager. If you see a new PageView event, it means you have successfully installed the Meta Pixel on your website.
Finally, one thing to note is that the Meta Pixel code relies on Facebook cookies. When testing browser events, you need to confirm whether your browser settings block third-party cookies. If you set it to block third-party cookies, the Meta Event Management Tool will not receive test events.
The above is a detailed introduction to the process of how to create a Meta Pixel code and install it on a WordPress website.
